We are very pleased to welcome you to this edition of our bimonthly newsletter.

Many things have happened since the integration of the initial team of Via Education. The number of projects, their scope and influence has increased, and an extraordinary team of researchers has been consolidated.

Currently, Via Education develops various lines of action aimed to achieve sustainable social development, within which are included: evaluation of educational programs, consulting local development agencies and NGO’s, development of social responsibility programs, developing models of social enterprises, and education for democratic citizenship (EDC) programs.

  --TO ANALYSE...

- The debate is open, how to improve and maintain the validity of the democratic system that our countries now enjoy? how to expand social citizenship? how to reduce poverty and inequality that remain as the great stain and threat to this democratic system? how to extend the policy? or how to recover the public debate and participation of the people? -

  --INSPIRING PEOPLE

This year, Ernesto Schiefelbein (Chile) has become the first person from the international community to receive the "Alumni Award for Outstaning Contribution to Education" at Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Education for Democratic Citizenship Program: Aprender a Participar, Participando! !

Our society is now wondering how the school can expand educational opportunities to educate citizens that could become active and democratic participants in solving the problems of their communities and in building a more democratic country. Therefore Via Education created the program "Aprender a participar, participando!" which is a space that seeks to promote the active and direct participation of students and where the facilitator creates a space to develop the potential of children, potential to grow on a personal and social way and at the same time contribute to the growth of others. A space where through the development of skills, promotes self-determination to make decisions and develop initiatives that contribute to a better quality of life for individuals and for their community.

Through collaboration with NCCEP Mexico (National Council for Community and Education Partnerships) a partnership was established with two Schools in the area of Santa Catarina NL to implement this program in an integral manner.

The first phase of this project will last for one semester, which consists in implementing the program at two levels: a) in the classrooms through the course of civics and ethics, and b) by the students establishing a student council. There are 14 teachers participating and 922 students.

The program began with the design of the structure of implementation and training of teachers. It also is evaluating the implementation process with an initial survey and final, as well as continuous monitoring during the intervention with teachers and students. The second phase, which will start soon, will expand the implementation of the program to five other states.
