Via education adapted a participative model based in Roger Hart for formal educational environments where it is generated an space for children shared with adults in order to carry out actions that will improve environment quality. Childrens from 6 through 11 years organize themselves to identify a problem, to analyze it deliberatively and then they do, implement and evaluate an action plan; all this made by themselves.
The children of the council did a cost analysis to see if it is factible to put air conditioning systems in the classrooms, but it was impossible. Then, they decided to install high-power fans in each classroom. As these objectives were the same for the Family parents society of the school, they decided to work together. |
The student council of the Primary school lead to a recycling campaign for to collect funds to buy those fans. The results were amazing. In just 15 days they collected 724kg of recyclable material such plastic, newspaper and aluminum and glass bottles. This quantity exceeded what the other sixty schools have collected in one month. The main apprenticeship was to learn that organizing by themselves was factible in conjunction with an specific methodology in order to improve a common problem. |
